How to Remove White-Out From Carpet

Removing white-out from carpet requires a gentle yet effective approach. Avoid harsh scrubbing, which can damage the carpet fibers. Instead, focus on blotting and using the right cleaning solutions.

  1. Prepare a Solvent Solution: Apply a liquid, non-oily, non-caustic solvent to a clean, dry cloth or towel. (Shaw Floors recommends this type of solvent for garment spot removal).

  2. Blot the Stain: Gently blot the white-out stain, working from the outside edges inward. Do not rub or scrub, as this can spread the stain and damage the carpet fibers. Repeat this process until no more white-out transfers to the cloth.

  3. Detergent Wash: Mix a small amount of clear, transparent dishwashing detergent (approximately ΒΌ teaspoon) with warm water in a bowl.

  4. Blot Again: Using a clean cloth or towel, blot the treated area with the detergent solution, again working from the outside in. Do not rub or scrub. Repeat until the stain is gone.

  5. Rinse and Dry: Allow the area to air dry completely.

Alternative Methods

While the above method is effective for most white-out stains, you can also try these alternatives:

  • Commercial Adhesive Remover: Products like Motsenbocker's Lift Off can effectively remove adhesive stains. Apply directly to the stain and let it sit for about a minute before blotting.
  • Rubbing Alcohol: Gently dab the stain with rubbing alcohol using a clean cloth. Blot from the outside in.

Important Considerations:

  • Always test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of the carpet first to ensure it doesn't damage the fibers or cause discoloration.
  • For stubborn stains, you may need to repeat the process several times.
  • If the stain persists after trying these methods, consider contacting a professional carpet cleaner.
