Joining Carpet Pieces Using Seam Tape

Published in Carpet Seaming 2 mins read

Joining two pieces of carpet together is commonly done using carpet seam tape. This method creates a strong bond along the cut edges.

The primary way to join two pieces of carpet is by using specially designed carpet seam tape. This tape acts as the bonding agent between the two cut edges, creating a secure and integrated floor covering.

Preparing the Carpet Pieces

Before joining, proper preparation is essential for a clean and strong seam:

  • Ensure that the nap (the direction the carpet fibers lie) of both pieces of carpet is running in the same direction. This helps the seam blend seamlessly and prevents it from being visually obvious or feeling different underfoot.

Inserting and Placing the Seam Tape

Once the carpet edges are properly aligned and the nap is going the same way, you can insert the seam tape under the seam. Here are the steps involved in placing the tape, as described:

  1. Cut the carpet seam tape to the length of the cut seam. Having the tape the exact length ensures the entire seam is supported.
  2. Place it centered under the two cut edges. The tape needs to sit directly beneath where the two carpet edges meet.
  3. Position the tape correctly so the adhesive is facing up. This is crucial for the adhesive to bond with the backing of both carpet pieces when activated.
  4. Note that seam tape is often marked, which can help make centering and placement easier.

By accurately placing the seam tape with the adhesive side up and centered under the aligned carpet edges, you prepare the seam for the bonding process, effectively setting up the join between the two pieces.
