How to Install Ceiling Plasterboard

Published in Ceiling Plasterboard Installation 4 mins read

Installing plasterboard on a ceiling involves several key steps, from preparing the structure to finishing the surface for painting. Following a methodical approach ensures a secure and smooth finish.

Steps to Install Ceiling Plasterboard

Here is a breakdown of the process based on common practices and the provided reference:

1. Prepare the Frame

The first and crucial step is checking the ceiling framing. This involves inspecting the joists or battens to ensure they are sound, level, and properly spaced. Any structural issues, uneven surfaces, or obstructions should be addressed before installation begins. A solid, flat frame is essential for a successful plasterboard ceiling.

2. Measure Your Ceiling

Accurate measurement is vital to determine the amount of plasterboard needed and plan the layout of the sheets. Carefully measure the length and width of the entire ceiling area. Consider the typical size of plasterboard sheets (e.g., 2400mm x 1200mm) and how they will fit together with minimal waste and joins positioned correctly on framing members.

3. Mark and Cut the Plasterboard to Size

Based on your measurements and layout plan, mark and cut the plasterboard to size. Use a measuring tape, straight edge, and a utility knife to score through the paper facing and the core on one side. Then, snap the board along the score line. Finally, cut through the paper on the other side. Ensure cuts are precise for a snug fit. Remember to cut out any openings for light fixtures or vents at this stage.

4. Apply Stud Adhesive

While screws are the primary fasteners, applying stud adhesive (also known as construction adhesive) to the framing members before hanging the sheets can provide extra grip, reduce the number of screws needed, and help prevent future sagging or screw pops. Apply a continuous bead of adhesive to the face of the joists or battens where the plasterboard sheet will be attached.

5. Hang the Plasterboard

This is the main installation step: hang the plasterboard. It's often easiest to start in a corner and work your way across the ceiling. Ceiling work can be physically demanding, so consider using plasterboard lifters or having a helper.

  • Lift the cut sheet into position, pressing it firmly against the adhesive and framing.
  • Secure the sheet using drywall screws, driving them through the plasterboard and into the framing. Screws should be spaced appropriately (check manufacturer guidelines) and slightly countersunk below the paper surface without breaking it.
  • Ensure the edges of adjoining sheets meet neatly on framing members.

6. Tape and Fill the Gaps then Sand Them

Once all the sheets are hung, the next step is to tape and fill the gaps, then sand them in preparation for painting.

  • Apply joint tape (paper or mesh) over all the seams between sheets and internal corners.
  • Using joint compound (mud), apply a thin layer over the tape and screw heads.
  • Allow the first coat to dry completely.
  • Apply subsequent coats of compound, feathering the edges wider with each pass, until the joints and screw heads are smooth and flush with the surrounding plasterboard surface.
  • Once fully dry, gently sand the filled areas to achieve a smooth, seamless finish ready for primer and paint.

7. Install the Cornice

The final step to complete the ceiling is to install the cornice. Cornice is the decorative moulding that covers the joint between the wall and the ceiling.

  • Measure and cut the cornice lengths to fit using a mitre box or saw for accurate angles, especially in corners.
  • Apply cornice adhesive to the back edges that will contact the wall and ceiling.
  • Press the cornice firmly into place.
  • Clean off any excess adhesive.
  • Fill any gaps at joints or between the cornice and the wall/ceiling with gap filler before painting.

Following these steps systematically will help you achieve a professional-looking plasterboard ceiling.
