What are 2 types of ribosomes?

Published in Cell Biology 1 min read

There are two main types of ribosomes, distinguished by their sedimentation coefficient: 70S and 80S. These differ in location and overall structure.

Types of Ribosomes:

Type Location Characteristics
70S Prokaryotic cells (e.g., bacteria) Found in bacteria, mitochondria, and chloroplasts.
80S Eukaryotic cells Located in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells.
  • 70S Ribosomes: These are smaller ribosomes, mainly found in prokaryotes. They consist of a 50S large subunit and a 30S small subunit.

  • 80S Ribosomes: These are larger ribosomes located in eukaryotic cells. They comprise a 60S large subunit and a 40S small subunit.
