The main cell type in cartilage is called a chondrocyte.
Chondrocytes: The Cells of Cartilage
Chondrocytes are the only cells found in cartilage. Their primary function is to:
- Maintain the extracellular matrix (ECM).
- Produce the cartilage matrix, which makes cartilage strong and flexible.
These cells reside within the ECM, surrounded by collagenous fibers, and release substances that contribute to the strength and flexibility of the cartilage tissue.
