The first person to describe cells was Robert Hooke. In 1665, he published a book called Micrographia, which contained detailed illustrations of the smallest parts of organisms. He referred to these parts as "cells" because they looked like tiny rooms.
It is important to note that Hooke observed dead cells from the cork of a tree. He did not see living cells, which were later discovered by Anton van Leeuwenhoek using his improved microscopes.
