How to dye cheek cells?

Published in Cell Staining 1 min read

To dye cheek cells for viewing under a microscope, follow these steps using methylene blue:

  1. Collect Cheek Cells: Gently scrape the inside of your mouth with a clean cotton swab.
  2. Prepare the Slide: Smear the cotton swab on the center of a microscope slide for 2 to 3 seconds.
  3. Apply Dye: Add a drop of methylene blue solution to the smear.
  4. Cover the Sample: Place a coverslip on top of the stained cells.
  5. Remove Excess Dye: Use a paper towel to absorb any excess methylene blue solution from the edge of the coverslip. This is done by touching the paper towel to one side of the coverslip.
