How do I edit the Subject Alternative Name in a certificate?

Published in Certificate Management 2 mins read

To edit or add Subject Alternative Names (SANs) in a certificate, particularly for UCC (Unified Communications Certificates), you typically need to access the certificate management area provided by your certificate issuer or hosting provider. The process involves selecting the specific certificate and navigating to its management options.

According to GoDaddy's instructions for UCC certificates, the steps to add or remove SANs are straightforward:

  1. Select SSL Certificates: Log in to your account and find the section dedicated to managing your SSL certificates.
  2. Select Manage: Locate the specific certificate for which you want to change the SANs and select the 'Manage' option associated with it.
  3. Select Change Subject Alternative Names: Within the certificate management interface, find and click the option to modify the Subject Alternative Names.
  4. Add a domain: Look for a field or option labeled "Add a domain" or similar.
  5. Enter the SAN and select Add: Enter the specific domain name (the SAN) you wish to add to the certificate into the provided field. Then, select 'Add' to include it.
  6. Add multiple SANs: If you need to add several SANs, you can often enter them one by one, following the previous step for each, or sometimes you might be able to enter them all at once, separated by commas.

This process allows you to extend the coverage of your existing certificate to include additional domain names, hostnames, or IP addresses beyond the primary common name.

For more details on managing SANs, refer to the specific help documentation provided by your certificate provider, such as the Add or remove Subject Alternative Names from my UCC certificates guide from GoDaddy.
