How to Clean a Chainsaw Gas Tank?

Published in Chainsaw Maintenance 2 mins read

Cleaning your chainsaw's gas tank is a straightforward process to maintain its performance, especially when dealing with old fuel residue. A common method involves using a fuel additive mix.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Chainsaw Gas Tank

Based on a recommended approach, here is a method you can follow to clean your chainsaw's fuel tank and components:

  1. Empty the Old Fuel: Start by carefully pouring out any old or stale gasoline currently in the chainsaw's fuel tank. Ensure you dispose of old fuel properly according to local regulations.
  2. Add a Cleaning Mixture: Prepare a specific cleaning mixture. Add a mix of 1 part Sea Foam to 2 parts fresh gasoline to the chainsaw tank. Aim for approximately 10 ounces total volume of this cleaning solution in the tank. Sea Foam is a popular fuel system cleaner that can help dissolve varnish and carbon deposits.
  3. Circulate the Mixture: To ensure the cleaning mixture reaches beyond just the tank and into the carburetor, you need to draw it through the fuel system. Remove the spark plug from the engine. With the spark plug removed, pull the start rope 10 or so times. This action helps to pull the fuel/cleaner mixture into the carburetor circuits without starting the engine.

This process helps to clean the tank walls and, more importantly, allows the cleaning mixture to work on deposits within the carburetor, which are crucial for smooth engine operation.

Why Clean the Gas Tank?

  • Remove Stale Fuel: Old gasoline can degrade and cause problems.
  • Prevent Clogging: Deposits from old fuel can clog the fuel filter and carburetor jets.
  • Improve Performance: A clean fuel system ensures proper fuel flow for reliable starting and running.

Keeping the gas tank and fuel system clean is vital for the longevity and efficient operation of your chainsaw. Regular maintenance, including fuel system cleaning, prevents issues down the line.
