How to start a Stihl chainsaw?

Published in Chainsaw operation 5 mins read

To start a Stihl chainsaw, you typically follow a sequence of steps involving engaging safety features, setting the controls, and pulling the starter cord, including specific actions like setting the master control lever while holding the throttle.

Starting a Stihl chainsaw requires understanding its specific controls and following the correct procedure for either a cold or hot start. While specific models may vary slightly, the general principles remain similar. Always consult your saw's instruction manual for model-specific details and safety guidelines.

Preparing to Start

Before attempting to start your Stihl chainsaw, ensure you are in a safe location, clear of obstacles and other people.

  • Check the saw: Ensure the chain is properly tensioned and sharpened, and the saw is fueled and oiled.
  • Wear protective gear: Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including a helmet with face shield, hearing protection, heavy-duty gloves, chainsaw chaps, and safety boots.
  • Positioning: Place the chainsaw on a stable, level surface. Ensure the chain is not touching anything.

Cold Start Procedure

This procedure is used when the engine is cold.

  1. Engage the Chain Brake: Push the front hand guard forward until it clicks into place. This locks the chain and prevents it from spinning during startup.
  2. Prime the Carburetor (if equipped): Press the primer bulb (if present) several times until fuel is visible and flowing through the lines.
  3. Set the Master Control Lever: This is a crucial step, often requiring specific coordination of controls. As shown in Stihl's procedures, you will need to:
    • Squeeze the throttle trigger.
    • While squeezing the throttle trigger, push the master control lever down with your thumb to the cold start/choke position. This position is typically the bottom-most setting and activates the choke for easier starting of a cold engine.
    • Position the chainsaw correctly for starting. This usually involves placing it securely on the ground.
  4. Hold the Saw Securely: Place your right foot through the rear handle opening to hold the saw firmly against the ground. Grip the front handle firmly with your left hand.
  5. Pull the Starter Cord: Pull the starter cord with your right hand using smooth, steady pulls. Do not pull the cord all the way out or let it snap back. Pull until you feel resistance, then give a firm pull.
  6. Listen for the "Pop": The engine should typically make a brief "pop" or attempt to start after a few pulls.
  7. Move Control Lever: As soon as you hear the "pop" (or if it doesn't pop after several pulls), move the master control lever up one notch to the warm start/half-throttle position. Do not move it back to the choke position.
  8. Continue Pulling: Continue pulling the starter cord at this new lever position. The engine should now start and run.
  9. Disengage Chain Brake: Once the engine is running, briefly blip the throttle trigger. This should automatically move the master control lever up to the idle position. Now, disengage the chain brake by pulling the front hand guard back towards the handle. The chain is now live.

Hot Start Procedure

If the engine is warm or hot, the starting procedure is simpler as the choke is not needed.

  1. Engage the Chain Brake: Push the front hand guard forward.
  2. Set the Master Control Lever: Move the lever directly to the run (I) or warm start/half-throttle position. The cold start/choke position is not used for hot starts.
  3. Hold and Pull: Secure the saw as described for a cold start and pull the starter cord until the engine starts.
  4. Disengage Chain Brake: Once running, briefly blip the throttle (if in warm start position) to move the lever to idle, then disengage the chain brake.

Important Safety Tips

  • Never start a chainsaw with the chain brake disengaged.
  • Do not drop start the saw (starting it while holding it in the air).
  • If the saw doesn't start after several attempts, refer to the troubleshooting section of your manual.
  • Always ensure good ventilation when starting the saw, especially in enclosed spaces.

Understanding the proper starting sequence, including specific actions like squeezing the throttle while setting the master control lever for a cold start, is essential for safe and efficient operation of your Stihl chainsaw.
