How Do You Use Charcoal Sketch Sticks?

Published in Charcoal Drawing 2 mins read

Charcoal sketch sticks are used to create a range of values and textures in drawings, but are generally better suited for broader strokes and shading than fine details.

To use charcoal sketch sticks effectively:

  • Hold the stick: Hold the charcoal stick at an angle to the paper. The broader the angle, the wider the stroke.
  • Apply pressure: Varying the pressure will create different values, with more pressure resulting in darker marks and less pressure creating lighter tones.
  • Blending: Use your finger, a blending stump, a paper towel, or a cloth to blend the charcoal and create smooth transitions.
  • Layering: Build up values gradually by layering charcoal in multiple passes.
  • Erasure: Use a kneaded eraser to lift charcoal and create highlights or correct mistakes.
  • Details: While charcoal sticks are not ideal for very fine details, you can achieve some detail by using the edge of the stick or by breaking the stick to create a sharper point. However, for precise details, charcoal pencils are better suited.

Charcoal sticks excel at creating broad, expressive strokes and filling in large areas of tone. Remember that because they are relatively thick, achieving very thin, precise lines can be challenging. When precision is needed, use a charcoal pencil.
