How to Light Charcoal

Published in Charcoal Lighting Methods 3 mins read

Lighting charcoal can be done using various simple and effective methods, often involving a charcoal chimney or specific fire starters.

To light charcoal effectively, you can use readily available materials or specialized starters to initiate the burning process. The goal is to get a portion of the coals hot and ash-covered, which will then ignite the rest.

Popular Methods for Lighting Charcoal

Based on common techniques, here are several ways to get your charcoal ready for grilling:

Using a Charcoal Chimney Starter

A charcoal chimney is one of the most popular tools for lighting charcoal without lighter fluid. It's a metal cylinder with a handle and grate.

  • Method 1: Crumpled Paper
    • Wad up several pieces of crumpled newspaper or use a piece of the charcoal bag itself.
    • Tuck this paper into the bottom section of the chimney starter, underneath the grate.
    • Fill the top section with charcoal briquettes or lump charcoal.
    • Light the paper from the bottom. The flame heats the charcoal above, and the chimney's design creates a draft that helps the coals ignite quickly and evenly.
    • The charcoal is ready when the top layer is covered in gray ash, typically within 10–20 minutes.

Alternative Lighting Methods

Beyond the standard chimney setup with paper, other materials and techniques can also be used.

  • Method 2: Paper Towel and Cooking Oil

    • Instead of newspaper, you can create a fire starter using a paper towel saturated with cooking oil.
    • Place the oil-soaked paper towel in the bottom of the charcoal chimney or directly among a small pile of charcoal in your grill.
    • Light the paper towel. The oil helps it burn longer, providing sustained heat to ignite the charcoal.
  • Method 3: Side Burner on Your Gas Grill

    • If you have a gas grill with a side burner, you can use it as a heat source.
    • Place a charcoal chimney directly onto the lit side burner.
    • The flame from the burner will heat the bottom of the chimney and quickly ignite the charcoal placed inside. This is a fast way to get coals going.
  • Method 4: Wax Fire Starter

    • Wax fire starters are small cubes or blocks specifically designed to burn for a set amount of time, providing consistent heat.
    • Place one or two wax fire starters in the bottom of your charcoal chimney or directly among a small pile of charcoal on your grill grate.
    • Light the fire starter. It will burn hot enough to ignite the surrounding charcoal.

Each of these methods provides an effective way to light charcoal, allowing you to choose the approach that best suits the materials you have available.
