Filter paper is used in gravity filtration primarily to separate solid particles from a liquid, allowing the liquid (filtrate) to pass through while retaining the solid (residue). This is a fundamental technique in chemistry and other fields for purification or isolating precipitates.

In gravity filtration, the liquid is poured through a funnel lined with filter paper. The force of gravity pulls the liquid through the pores of the paper, while solid particles larger than the pore size are trapped on the surface of the paper.

How Filter Paper Works in Gravity Filtration

The effectiveness of filter paper in gravity filtration relies on its porous structure. Filter paper is made from cellulose fibers, creating a matrix with small pores. These pores act as a barrier, selectively allowing liquids to pass through while blocking solid particles.

While standard filter paper works, specific types are designed to improve the process.   • Higher Loading Capacity: With a larger surface area, the filter paper can hold more solid residue before it becomes clogged. This is particularly useful when filtering solutions with a significant amount of solid material.

Essentially, filter paper is the barrier that performs the separation in gravity filtration. Using specialized types like fluted paper optimizes the process for speed and efficiency.
