At what age do children know their gender?

Published in Child Development 1 min read

Children develop an understanding of gender at different stages. According to research, certain milestones are typically observed:

  • By 2 years old: Children can often identify differences between boys and girls.
  • By age 3: Most children can identify themselves as either a "boy" or a "girl". It's important to note that this self-identification might not always align with their assigned sex at birth.

Therefore, while children begin to notice gender differences around 2 years old, most can identify their own gender by age 3.
