Why Does My Child Produce So Much Earwax?

Published in Child Health 2 mins read

Children often appear to produce a lot of earwax due to a combination of factors related to their ear anatomy and common childhood conditions. Their ear canals are simply more prone to wax build-up.

Contributing Factors to Excessive Earwax in Children

Here's a breakdown of the reasons why your child might have a lot of earwax:

  • Narrower Ear Canals: Children's ear canals are significantly narrower than those of adults. This smaller space makes it easier for earwax to become trapped and accumulate. Imagine trying to clean a small tube – it's harder to reach all areas.

  • Eczema: Many young children are susceptible to eczema, a skin condition that causes dry, flaky skin. When these skin flakes shed in the ear canal, they can mix with the earwax, creating a larger, solid plug. This makes it seem like they are producing more wax than they actually are.

  • Normal Earwax Production: Earwax production varies from person to person. Some children naturally produce more earwax than others. This is perfectly normal and not necessarily a cause for concern.

  • Attempted Cleaning: Ironically, attempts to clean the ear canal with cotton swabs or other objects can often push the earwax further in, leading to impaction. This creates the appearance of excessive wax production. The ears are self-cleaning, and usually, the earwax will migrate out naturally.

What to Do About Excessive Earwax

While some earwax is normal and healthy, excessive build-up can cause discomfort or hearing problems. If you suspect your child has excessive earwax, consult with their pediatrician or an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist. They can safely remove the earwax and advise you on appropriate management strategies. Avoid using cotton swabs to clean your child's ears, as this can push the wax further in and potentially damage the ear canal. There are over-the-counter earwax removal drops available, but always consult a doctor before using them on a child.
