How Do I Restore a Window in Chrome?

Published in Chrome Browser 2 mins read

To restore a window in Chrome that you recently closed, the quickest method is to use a keyboard shortcut.

Restoring Chrome Windows and Tabs

Here's how you can restore windows and tabs in Chrome:

  • Keyboard Shortcut: Press Ctrl+Shift+T (on Windows and Linux) or Cmd+Shift+T (on macOS). This shortcut reopens the last closed window or tab. You can repeatedly use this shortcut to restore multiple recently closed windows/tabs, in reverse order of closing.

  • Using the Chrome Menu (if available): Sometimes, if Chrome crashed or didn't close properly, you'll see an option when you reopen Chrome to "Restore" the previous session. This isn't always present. If it is, click the "Restore" button.

  • History Menu: You can also access your recently closed tabs and windows through Chrome's history menu.

    1. Click the three vertical dots (the "Customize and control Google Chrome" menu) in the top-right corner of the Chrome window.
    2. Go to "History".
    3. Hover over "Recently closed". You'll see a list of recently closed tabs and windows. Select the window you want to restore. You can also simply select "History" again to see your full browsing history and find specific pages.
  • If Chrome Closed Unexpectedly (Crash): When you restart Chrome after a crash, it should automatically offer to restore your previous session. If it doesn't, try the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+T or Cmd+Shift+T) first.

Important Considerations:

  • Incognito Mode: Windows and tabs closed in Incognito mode are not recoverable through history or the "reopen closed tab" shortcut. Incognito mode is designed for privacy, and browsing history is not saved.

  • Clearing Browsing Data: If you've cleared your browsing history and cache, you might not be able to restore previously closed tabs or windows.

  • Session Management Extensions: There are Chrome extensions available that offer more robust session management, including saving and restoring multiple sessions. These can be useful if you frequently need to switch between different sets of tabs.
