How do I import Chrome passwords?

Published in Chrome Passwords 2 mins read

Importing passwords into Chrome involves using a CSV file that contains your saved logins. Here's how to do it on Android:

  1. Open Chrome: On your Android device, launch the Chrome browser app.
  2. Access Settings: Tap the "More" menu (usually three dots) located at the top right corner of the screen. Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
  3. Go to Password Manager: Within the Settings menu, select "Password Manager." Under Password Manager, tap the gear icon at the top right to access settings.
  4. Find Import Option: Scroll down to the "Import Passwords" section and select it.
  5. Authenticate: You'll likely need to authenticate using your device's security method (PIN, fingerprint, etc.) to proceed.
  6. Choose CSV File: Select the .csv file containing your passwords. This file should have been created when you exported your passwords from another browser or password manager.
  7. Import: Tap the "Import" button to begin the import process. Chrome will then import the passwords from the CSV file into your Google account.

Important Considerations:

  • CSV File Format: The CSV file needs to be in a specific format for Chrome to recognize it. A typical format includes columns for website URL, username, and password. Exported passwords from other password managers are usually already in the correct format. If not, you will need to rearrange the column order.
  • Security: CSV files are plain text and can be easily read if someone gains access to your device or Google account. Delete the CSV file after you've successfully imported your passwords to improve security.
  • Alternative Platforms: These instructions are specifically for Android. The process might vary slightly on other platforms (e.g., desktop Chrome). On desktop, you typically enable a flag in chrome://flags called #password-import and restart the browser before the import option becomes visible in the Password Manager settings. Then, the rest of the steps are similar to the Android process.
