How to Install ChromeOS Flex on a Non-Chromebook Device

Published in ChromeOS Flex 3 mins read

The process of installing ChromeOS on a Chromebook doesn't exist in the traditional sense since Chromebooks already come with ChromeOS pre-installed. However, what you might be looking for is how to install ChromeOS Flex on a non-Chromebook device (like a PC or Mac). ChromeOS Flex allows you to experience ChromeOS on older hardware. Here's how to do that:

Important Note: You cannot directly install the ChromeOS version found on Chromebooks onto other devices. ChromeOS Flex is a modified version designed for broader hardware compatibility. Also, installing ChromeOS Flex will likely erase all data on the target device's hard drive, so back up any important files beforehand!

Here's a breakdown of the steps:

1. Create a ChromeOS Flex USB Installer

  • Download ChromeOS Flex: Get the official ChromeOS Flex image from Google. You'll need another computer to do this.
  • Use the Chromebook Recovery Utility: This is the recommended method. Install the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension from the Chrome Web Store on another computer.
  • Create the USB Installer:
    • Open the Chromebook Recovery Utility.
    • Click "Get Started."
    • Select "ChromeOS Flex" from the list of manufacturers.
    • Choose the specific ChromeOS Flex model.
    • Insert a USB drive (at least 8GB). Warning: All data on this USB drive will be erased!
    • Select the USB drive and click "Create Now."
    • Wait for the process to complete. This may take some time.

2. Boot Your Device From the USB Installer

  • Determine the Boot Key: Figure out which key you need to press to access the boot menu or BIOS settings on the computer you want to install ChromeOS Flex on. Common keys include Esc, F2, F10, F12, or Delete. Refer to your computer's manual or the manufacturer's website if you're unsure.
  • Insert the USB drive: Plug the ChromeOS Flex USB installer into the target computer.
  • Power on the computer and enter the boot menu: As the computer starts, repeatedly press the boot key.
  • Select the USB drive as the boot device: In the boot menu, choose the USB drive from which you want to boot. This might be listed as a USB drive name or the manufacturer of the drive.

3. Install or Try ChromeOS Flex

  • Try ChromeOS Flex (Optional): After booting from the USB, you can choose to "Try ChromeOS Flex" to test it without installing. This is recommended to ensure everything works correctly with your hardware.
  • Install ChromeOS Flex (Permanent): If you're ready to install, follow the on-screen instructions to install ChromeOS Flex to the computer's hard drive. Warning: This will erase all data on the hard drive! The installer will guide you through the process.

4. Set Up and Enroll (Optional)

  • Set up your Google Account: Once the installation is complete, ChromeOS Flex will boot up. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with your Google Account.
  • Enroll (Optional): If you're using ChromeOS Flex in a business or school environment, you might need to enroll the device with your organization's Google Workspace domain. Contact your IT administrator for instructions.
