How do I change my Chrome OS version?

Published in ChromeOS Updates 2 mins read

You don't directly change your Chrome OS version to a specific, chosen version. Instead, you update to the latest stable version offered by Google for your Chromebook model. Here's how to check for and install updates:

  1. Open Settings: Click the "time" in the bottom right corner of your Chromebook's screen, then click the gear icon (Settings).

  2. Navigate to About ChromeOS: In the left sidebar of the Settings window, select "About ChromeOS."

  3. Check for Updates: Click the "Check for updates" button.

    • If an update is available, your Chromebook will automatically download it.
    • Follow the on-screen prompts to restart your Chromebook and complete the installation.

Important Considerations:

  • You cannot typically downgrade to an older version of Chrome OS. Google only provides updates to the latest stable release. Advanced users might be able to do this through developer mode, but this is highly discouraged as it can create significant security vulnerabilities and instability. It will also void your warranty.
  • Update Availability Depends on Your Device: Not all Chromebooks receive updates at the same time. The availability of updates depends on your Chromebook's model and the support lifecycle set by Google. Older Chromebooks may eventually stop receiving updates.
  • Developer Mode: While developer mode allows more control over your system, including potentially attempting to change versions (again, strongly discouraged), it significantly weakens security. Use it only if you fully understand the risks.

In summary, you don't "change" your Chrome OS version in the way you might on other operating systems. You keep it up-to-date by checking for and installing the latest available updates through the Settings menu.
