Understanding the Causes of Yellow Sweat

Published in Chromhidrosis 2 mins read

Why is My Sweat Yellow?

Yellow sweat is often caused by a pigment called lipofuscin, a yellowish-brown substance produced in the sweat glands. This is a characteristic of a rare condition called chromhidrosis, which can cause sweat to be various colors, including yellow, green, blue, brown, or black. The pigment's presence leads to the discoloration of sweat.

However, yellow sweat stains on clothing aren't always due to chromhidrosis. The yellow discoloration can also result from a chemical reaction between your sweat and other substances.

Several factors contribute to sweat appearing yellow or causing yellow stains:

1. Lipofuscin and Chromhidrosis:

  • Lipofuscin: This yellowish-brown pigment is a common cause of yellow sweat. It's made of fat-like residues and is produced within the sweat glands.
  • Chromhidrosis: This rare condition directly involves the production of colored sweat, including yellow sweat. Activities like hot showers and skin friction can exacerbate discoloration in individuals with chromhidrosis.

2. Chemical Reactions:

  • Deodorants/Antiperspirants: Chemicals in these products can react with your sweat, leading to yellow stains on clothing.
  • Laundry Detergents: Interactions between sweat and certain laundry detergents may also produce yellow stains.
  • Bacteria: Sweat itself is usually colorless, but bacteria on your skin can interact with it, leading to a yellow discoloration.

Differentiating Between Chromhidrosis and Other Causes

While chromhidrosis is a possible explanation, the yellow discoloration might be due to interactions between sweat and external factors. If you notice recurring yellow sweat consistently, it’s advisable to consult a dermatologist to rule out any underlying conditions.
