How to Prepare Air Dry Clay for Painting

Published in Clay Painting Preparation 2 mins read

To effectively paint air dry clay after it has fully dried, preparing the surface is a key step.

The surface of air dry clay is very porous once dry. This means if you apply paint directly, it can be absorbed unevenly, potentially leading to dull colors or requiring many coats.

To address this porosity and create a better base for your paint, you may wish to seal the item before painting. The reference suggests that applying one or two coats of gesso to the clay will help seal it and stop your chosen paint from soaking in too much.

Why Prepare Air Dry Clay Before Painting?

  • Porous Surface: Dry air dry clay is absorbent.
  • Paint Absorption: Direct painting can result in paint soaking in excessively.
  • Uneven Finish: Colors might appear dull or patchy.

How to Prepare: Sealing with Gesso

  1. Ensure your air dry clay creation is completely dry.
  2. Obtain gesso, a type of primer commonly used in painting.
  3. Apply a thin, even coat of gesso to the entire surface of your clay piece using a brush.
  4. Allow the first coat to dry completely.
  5. Apply a second coat if desired, especially if the clay was very porous.
  6. Let the gesso dry fully according to the product instructions before proceeding with painting.

Applying gesso creates a sealed, smooth base, which not only prevents excessive paint absorption but also helps paint colors appear more vibrant and true.
