What is climate change in kids terms?

Published in Climate Science 2 mins read

Climate change is like the Earth's temperature is going up, up, up, much faster than it usually does, because of things people are doing.

Think of the Earth like a big greenhouse. The sun's warmth comes in, but some of it gets trapped inside. That's good! It keeps us warm enough to live. But, we're adding extra "blankets" to the greenhouse, making it too warm. These "blankets" are things like pollution from cars, factories, and burning trees. This extra warmth is causing problems all over the world.

What's Causing Climate Change?

  • Burning Fossil Fuels: When we burn coal, oil, and gas (called fossil fuels) for energy, it releases gases into the air. These gases trap heat.
  • Cutting Down Trees: Trees help clean the air by taking in some of those gases. When we cut them down, they can't do their job, and the gases stay in the air.
  • Too Much Stuff! Making lots of things in factories also releases gases.

What are the Effects of Climate Change?

  • Warmer Temperatures: The Earth is getting hotter.
  • Melting Ice: Glaciers and ice sheets are melting, which makes the sea level rise.
  • Rising Sea Levels: The ocean is getting higher, which can flood coastal areas.
  • More Extreme Weather: We're seeing more strong storms, floods, and droughts.

What Can We Do About It?

Even though climate change sounds scary, we can all help!

  • Use Less Energy: Turn off lights when you leave a room.
  • Walk or Bike: Instead of driving in a car, walk or bike whenever you can.
  • Recycle: Recycling helps save energy and resources.
  • Plant Trees: Trees help clean the air.
  • Tell Others: Talk to your friends and family about climate change and how they can help too!

Climate change is a big problem, but if everyone does their part, we can make a difference and help keep our planet healthy!
