Clouds can reach incredible heights, depending on their type. Cumulonimbus clouds, for example, are known for their towering presence and can extend as high as 69,000 feet! However, the typical height range for these impressive clouds is between 10,000 and 52,000 feet. Other cloud types reach different altitudes; for instance, the base of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds can sometimes be higher than 6,500 feet (2,000 meters). Beyond a certain altitude, however, the atmosphere becomes too dry to support cloud formation. Above this point, there is little to no water vapor available for condensation, resulting in either thin, invisible vapor or no clouds at all.
