How to Make a Coconut Shell Planter

Creating a unique planter from a coconut shell is a rewarding and eco-friendly project. It involves preparing the shell and adding your chosen plant.

Here’s a straightforward guide to making a coconut shell planter, including a key detail about preparing the shell for drainage:

1. Prepare the Coconut Shell

Begin with a dry, clean coconut shell. This might involve removing the outer husk and cracking or cutting the shell open to achieve your desired shape (e.g., a half-shell bowl or a whole shell with an opening). Make sure the inside is scraped clean of any remaining coconut meat fibers.

2. Address Drainage Needs

Proper drainage is crucial for the health of any plant, preventing waterlogging and root rot. Water needs a way to exit the bottom of the planter.

  • Drainage Hole Detail: Based on one approach, if you have taken a coconut shell that already has a hole at the bottom, you can conveniently skip the step of creating a separate drainage hole. This existing hole serves the necessary function, meaning you do not need to make an extra hole at the bottom for the drainage hole. Utilizing such a shell simplifies the preparation process.

If your coconut shell does not already have a hole, you will need to create one or more drainage holes using a drill with a suitable drill bit (such as a wood or spade bit).

3. Finish the Shell (Optional)

For a smoother feel and appearance, you can sand the edges of the shell. Some crafters also sand the exterior. Applying a sealant can protect the shell, especially if it will be exposed to outdoor elements.

4. Add Potting Mix and Plant

Once the shell is prepared with drainage, add a small layer of gravel or pebbles at the bottom, particularly if you had to drill a hole. This helps prevent soil from washing out. Fill the shell with a lightweight potting mix suitable for your plant. Carefully place your small plant into the soil and add more soil around it as needed.

5. Display Your New Planter

Your handmade coconut shell planter is now ready to be displayed. It can be placed on a windowsill, shelf, or hung using macrame cords attached to the shell.

Making a planter from a coconut shell is a great way to repurpose natural materials, adding a unique, tropical touch to your living space or garden.
