How to put coffee in a coffee filter?

Published in Coffee Brewing Basics 2 mins read

To put coffee in a filter for brewing, you typically prepare the filter and then add the ground coffee before adding water.

Preparing Your Coffee Filter

Before adding coffee, a key step is to rinse your filter paper.

  • Rinse the Filter: Pour a little water into the filter paper. This helps to seat the filter properly in the cone or basket and, importantly, removes any possibility of a paper taste transferring to your final coffee.
  • Discard Water: Allow the water to drain through the filter and discard this water from the carafe or mug below.

Adding the Ground Coffee

Once the filter is rinsed and the water is discarded, you are ready to add the coffee grounds.

  • Measure Coffee: Add 20g of ground coffee to the filter. The amount can vary depending on your brewing method and the desired strength, but 20g is a common starting point for a single serving using methods like pour-over.
  • Distribute Grounds: Gently shake the filter to level the coffee grounds.

The Initial Pour (Blooming)

After the coffee is in the filter, the first pour of water is crucial.

  • Wet the Grounds: Pour a little of your hot water to wet the grounds. This initial pour is often called the "bloom."
  • Use Enough Water: Around 50ml will do for this initial wetting phase.
  • Observe the Bloom: Watch as the coffee grounds expand and release trapped gases (the bloom). This step is vital for even extraction during the rest of the brewing process.

Follow these steps to properly prepare your filter and add coffee for a great cup.
