The Burr Grinding Mechanism
The process involves feeding coffee beans into a chamber where they are drawn between a stationary burr and a rotating burr.

- Bean Entry: Coffee beans are introduced into the grinding chamber, typically from a hopper.
- Drawing In: As the rotating burr spins, it pulls the whole beans into the gap between itself and the stationary burr.
- Crushing and Grinding: The beans are crushed and broken down into smaller particles as they pass through the progressively narrowing space between the burrs.
- Size Determination: The distance between the two burrs dictates the final grind size. Adjusting this distance allows you to select anything from very fine espresso grounds to coarse French press grounds.
- Grounds Exit: Once the coffee is ground to the set size, it moves past some cutting surface where the coffee comes out. The ground coffee is then spun out of the grinder housing. This expulsion is often assisted by internal components that provide resistance, potentially referred to as wings, which help propel the ground coffee out of the grinding chamber and into the collection bin.
