How to Prepare a Latte?

Published in Coffee Preparation 3 mins read

Preparing a latte involves combining espresso with steamed milk and a thin layer of milk foam. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making a latte at home:

1. Gather Your Ingredients and Equipment

  • Espresso: You'll need either an espresso machine, a Moka pot, or a strong coffee concentrate (like cold brew).
  • Milk: Whole milk is ideal for its richness, but you can also use 2% milk, oat milk, almond milk, or soy milk.
  • Milk Steaming Pitcher: Necessary if you have an espresso machine with a steam wand.
  • Latte Glass or Mug: A wide-mouthed mug or glass showcases the layers nicely.
  • Optional: Sweeteners (sugar, syrup), flavoring extracts.

2. Brew Your Espresso

  • Espresso Machine: Pull 1-2 shots of espresso into your mug. Aim for about 1-2 ounces.
  • Moka Pot: Brew the coffee in your Moka pot, filling about 1/3 of your mug.
  • Coffee Concentrate: Use a concentrated coffee brew and adjust the amount to taste.

3. Steam Your Milk

  • Espresso Machine with Steam Wand:
    1. Pour cold milk into your steaming pitcher, filling it about 1/3 full.
    2. Purge the steam wand by briefly opening it to release any condensation.
    3. Submerge the steam wand tip just below the surface of the milk and open the valve. Introduce air to create foam by keeping the tip near the surface. This is called "stretching" the milk.
    4. Once you've created the desired amount of foam (a thin layer), lower the steam wand deeper into the milk to heat and swirl it. This creates a smooth, velvety texture.
    5. Tap the pitcher on the counter to release any large bubbles and swirl gently.
  • Alternative Milk Steaming Methods:
    • Microwave: Heat milk in a microwave-safe container. Whisk vigorously or use a frother to create foam.
    • French Press: Heat milk on the stovetop (do not boil). Pour into a French press and pump the plunger up and down to create foam.
    • Electric Milk Frother: Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

4. Assemble Your Latte

  1. Pour the Steamed Milk: Gently pour the steamed milk over the espresso, holding back the foam with a spoon initially. The classic latte ratio is approximately one-third espresso to two-thirds steamed milk, but adjust to your preference.
  2. Add the Milk Foam: Spoon the remaining milk foam over the top of the milk. You should have a thin, even layer.
  3. Optional: Add Sweeteners or Flavorings: Stir in any sweeteners or flavorings as desired.
  4. Enjoy: Your latte is ready to savor!

Latte Ratios:

Ingredient Classic Ratio Creamy Ratio Strong Ratio
Espresso 1/3 1/4 1/2
Steamed Milk 2/3 3/4 1/2
Foam Thin Layer Thin Layer Thin Layer
