What is the Climate in Colombia for Kids?

Published in Colombia Climate 3 mins read

Hey kids! Want to know what the weather is like in a cool country called Colombia?

Colombia is a super interesting place because it's right near the middle of the Earth, on a line called the Equator. This makes its climate mostly tropical.

Mostly Warm and Sunny!

Because Colombia is close to the Equator, the weather is usually warm all the time. It's kind of like having summer weather for most of the year! You don't really have cold winters or snowy days in most places there, like you might in other countries.

Not Many "Seasons" Like Winter or Summer

Instead of having four different seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter) where the temperature changes a lot, Colombia has few seasonal changes except for rainfall. This means the temperature stays pretty warm and steady throughout the year.

What About Rain?

Even though the temperature stays warm, some months are rainier than others. So, instead of seasons changing the temperature, the seasons mostly change how much rain falls. There might be a time of year with lots of sunshine and another time with more rain.

Different Places, Different Weather

Colombia is a big country with tall mountains, sunny beaches, and big rainforests!

  • Coastal areas: Can be hot and humid.
  • Mountain areas: Can be cooler, the higher you go, the colder it gets!
  • Amazon Rainforest (like the southern part): This area, called the selva, is very humid and gets a lot of rain, helping trees and plants grow tall and green.

So, while the basic climate is warm and tropical, the weather can feel a little different depending on where you are in Colombia!

Here's a quick look:

Where in Colombia? What it's like?
Most Places Warm all the time, few temperature changes
Near the Ocean Hot and maybe a bit sticky (humid)
In the Mountains Cooler, maybe even chilly up high!
In the Rainforest Warm, very humid, lots and lots of rain! (like the southern half)

So, for kids visiting or learning about Colombia, remember: it's mostly warm and tropical, like summer all year round, but watch out for the rain, and the weather can change depending on if you're by the beach, in the mountains, or in the steamy rainforest!
