How Do You Brighten Orange?

Published in Color Mixing 2 mins read

To achieve a bright orange color, specifically a "pure, dazzling orange," you do so by mixing the two primary colors.

Achieving Pure, Dazzling Orange Through Mixing

Based on painting pigment principles, the method to create a bright orange involves combining specific primary colors. This process focuses on selecting the right yellow and red to yield a vibrant result.

Required Pigments

According to traditional pigment mixing:

  • Yellow: Use cadmium yellow (pale) or cadmium lemon. These are clean, bright yellows that contribute to the intensity of the resulting orange.
  • Red/Rose: Combine the yellow with a little permanent rose. Permanent rose is a cool, vibrant red that helps produce a pure orange hue when mixed with the specified yellows.

Alternative Red

If you use cadmium red in place of permanent rose, the result will be different. Cadmium red is a warmer red and will produce a richer, more rounded orange compared to the sharp brightness achieved with permanent rose.

The Mixing Process

The process is straightforward:

  1. Start with your chosen yellow pigment (cadmium yellow pale or cadmium lemon).
  2. Gradually add a little of the red pigment (permanent rose or cadmium red) to the yellow.
  3. Mix thoroughly until the desired shade of pure or bright orange is achieved.

Using the correct primary colors and adjusting the ratio allows you to control the exact brightness and tone of the orange you create.
