What Two Colors Make Black?

Published in Color Mixing 2 mins read

There is no combination of just two colors that will create true black. Black is the absence of light, not a mixture of pigments.

However, to achieve a dark or blackish color, you can mix various pigment pairs, creating a dark shade that approximates black. The video reference mentions mixing red, blue, and yellow, which are primary colors in subtractive color mixing (like with paints). While not strictly two colors, it hints at the principle of combining complementary color pairs to achieve darkness. For example, a dark grey-black could result from mixing a dark shade of blue with a dark shade of orange.

Achieving Dark Shades:

  • Mixing Complementary Colors: Complementary colors (opposite each other on the color wheel) tend to neutralize each other when mixed, resulting in a darker shade. For example:

    • Blue + Orange
    • Red + Green
    • Yellow + Purple
  • Using Black Pigment Directly: The easiest way to obtain black is to use black pigment directly, as it's already formulated to absorb most wavelengths of light.

While there's no combination of exactly two colors that make a true black, mixing complementary colors or even using three primaries in specific ratios leads to a dark shade that visually appears as black in many contexts.
