How is black created?

Published in Color Science 1 min read

Black is created when no visible light reaches the eye, or when all wavelengths of visible light are absorbed by an object or substance.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Absorption of Light: In the visible spectrum, colors are determined by the wavelengths of light that are reflected back to our eyes. Black objects or substances absorb almost all of the light wavelengths, reflecting very little or none. Because no light (or very little) is reflected, we perceive it as black.

  • Absence of Light: Black can also be experienced when there is a complete absence of light. For example, in a completely dark room where no light is present, everything appears black.

  • Pigments and Dyes: Black pigments and dyes are designed to absorb light rather than reflect it. These are commonly used in paints, inks, and fabrics.

  • Perception: Black is ultimately a visual perception. Our brains interpret the absence or near absence of reflected light as the color black.
