What are the Primary colors?

Published in Color Theory 1 min read

The primary colors are the foundation of color mixing. They cannot be created by mixing other colors. There are two primary color models:

Additive primary colors:

  • Red, Green, Blue (RGB): These colors are used in light-based systems like computer screens and televisions. When all three colors are combined, they create white light.

Subtractive primary colors:

  • Cyan, Magenta, Yellow (CMY): These colors are used in printing and painting, where they absorb light to create colors. When all three colors are combined, they create black.

The most common primary colors we learn in childhood are red, yellow, and blue (RYB), used in traditional painting. However, it's important to understand that this is a simplification and that both RGB and CMY are more accurate representations of primary colors in different contexts.
