What is a Secondary Color?

Published in Color Theory 1 min read

A secondary color is created by mixing two primary colors in equal amounts.

Essentially, secondary colors sit between primary colors on a color wheel and are combinations of those primaries. Traditionally, the secondary colors are orange (red + yellow), purple (red + blue), and green (blue + yellow).

Here's a breakdown:

  • Primary Colors: Red, Yellow, Blue (These colors cannot be created by mixing other colors.)
  • Secondary Colors: Created by mixing two primary colors.
Primary Color 1 Primary Color 2 Secondary Color
Red Yellow Orange
Red Blue Purple
Blue Yellow Green

Therefore, orange, purple, and green are the fundamental secondary colors.
