How do you turn on a desktop computer?

Published in Computer Basics 2 mins read

To turn on a desktop computer, locate and press the power button.

Finding the Power Button

The power button's location varies depending on the computer case, but it usually has the universal power button symbol: ⏽ or ⎐. It's typically found:

  • On the front of the computer case: Often a large, easily accessible button.
  • On the top of the computer case: Common for tower-style desktops.
  • On the back of the computer case: Less common, but possible, usually near the power supply.

The Startup Process

Once you press the power button, the computer will begin its startup process. This may involve:

  • A brief pause: While the power supply initializes.
  • Indicator lights: Illuminating to show the computer is receiving power.
  • The appearance of the BIOS/UEFI screen: Showing the computer's basic input/output system or unified extensible firmware interface information.
  • The operating system loading: This will vary depending on your operating system (e.g., Windows, macOS, Linux). You might see a logo or progress indicator.
  • Login screen: Where you enter your username and password (if applicable).

Be patient, as the startup process can take some time. Avoid interrupting the process unless there is a clear problem.
