Sanding concrete is a process used to remove imperfections, old coatings, stains, or simply to create a smoother finish. The method and tools depend heavily on the size of the area and the desired outcome.

Key Steps for Sanding Concrete:

  1. Preparation: Clear the area completely. Sweep or vacuum the surface to remove dust and debris. Address any major cracks or holes before sanding if a smooth, uniform finish is desired.
  2. Tool Selection: Choose the appropriate sanding tool. For large areas, a walk-behind concrete grinder or floor sander is often used. For smaller areas, edges, or touch-ups, a handheld grinder or orbital sander is suitable.
  3. Grit Selection: Select the correct grit sandpaper or abrasive pad based on the amount of material you need to remove and the desired finish.
    • For orbital sanders, start by choosing sandpaper with an 80 to 220 grit, depending on how much surface you want to remove. Lower grits (e.g., 80) remove more material; higher grits (e.g., 220) provide a smoother finish. You may need to progress through several grits, starting low and ending high.
  4. Sanding Process:
    • Using an orbital sander: Place the sander flat on the concrete surface. Turn it on and begin moving it. When using an orbital sander, use even pressure at all times to prevent swirls, divots, and over-sanding in some areas. Then, move the sander with steady, even pressure across the concrete in overlapping passes.
    • Using a floor grinder: Operate the machine according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically moving it steadily across the floor in sections.
    • Always keep the tool moving while it's engaged with the surface to avoid creating depressions.
  5. Dust Management: Concrete sanding generates a significant amount of fine dust. Use a dust shroud with your grinder/sander and connect it to a HEPA vacuum cleaner. Ensure adequate ventilation in the work area.
  6. Cleaning: After sanding, thoroughly vacuum or sweep the area to remove all dust. You may need to damp mop the surface to pick up any remaining fine particles.
  7. Repeat (if necessary): If the desired smoothness is not achieved, repeat the sanding process with a finer grit abrasive.

Understanding Grit Sizes

The grit number indicates the coarseness of the abrasive. Lower numbers mean coarser abrasives, and higher numbers mean finer abrasives.
