Characteristics of Loose Connective Tissue

  • Composition: The extracellular matrix consists of collagen and elastic fibers, scattered fibroblast cells, and a gel-like ground substance containing water, salts, and polysaccharides.

Types of Loose Connective Tissue

  • Areolar Tissue: The most widely distributed type. It supports and binds other tissues, holds body fluids, defends against infection, and stores nutrients.
  • Adipose Tissue: Contains mostly adipocytes (fat cells). Stores energy as fat and provides insulation and cushioning.
  • Reticular Tissue: Contains reticular fibers that create a supportive framework for lymphoid organs like lymph nodes, spleen, and bone marrow.
