What is the minimum height for DPC above ground?

Published in Construction Standards 1 min read

The minimum height for a Damp Proof Course (DPC) above the finished external ground or paving level is 150mm.

This height requirement ensures that the DPC effectively prevents rising damp from affecting the structure. Placing the DPC at least 150mm above ground level minimizes the risk of moisture bridging the DPC through splashes, accumulated debris, or raised ground levels over time. This also allows for sufficient visual inspection of the DPC.

Essentially, the DPC acts as a horizontal barrier, preventing ground moisture from rising up through the walls via capillary action. Maintaining this minimum height helps ensure the long-term effectiveness of the damp proofing system. The DPC also needs to be linked with any DPM (Damp Proof Membrane). The width of the DPC must be correct, and it must be fully bedded and either welded or lapped by a minimum of 100mm.
