How to Grow Beets in Containers

Published in Container Beet Gardening 2 mins read

Growing beets in containers is surprisingly easy! With the right container and a little care, you can enjoy homegrown beets all season long.

Choosing the Right Container

The most crucial factor is container depth. Beets need at least a ten-inch deep pot to allow their roots ample space to grow and fully develop. The width and length are less critical and can vary depending on how many beets you plan to grow. Remember to space your beet seeds approximately three inches apart for optimal growth.

  • Depth: Minimum 10 inches
  • Width/Length: Flexible, depending on the number of beets.

Planting Your Beets

  1. Select your container: Ensure it meets the minimum depth requirement. A large pot, a half-wine barrel, or even a deep grow bag will work well.
  2. Fill with soil: Use high-quality potting mix suitable for vegetables. Avoid using garden soil directly as it can compact easily and restrict root growth in containers.
  3. Sow the seeds: Plant beet seeds about three inches apart.
  4. Water thoroughly: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
  5. Thin seedlings: Once seedlings emerge, thin them to maintain the three-inch spacing for healthy root development.

Container Beet Growing Tips

  • Sunlight: Beets thrive in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily).
  • Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods. Check the soil moisture regularly and water when the top inch feels dry.
  • Fertilizing: A balanced, slow-release fertilizer can help promote healthy growth. Follow the fertilizer instructions carefully.
