When were female condoms invented?

Published in Contraception 1 min read

The female condom was invented in 1990 by Danish MD Lasse Hessel.

Development and Approval

Lasse Hessel, a Danish physician, is credited with inventing the modern female condom. Following its invention in 1990, the female condom (specifically, the FC1 version made of polyurethane) received approval for sale in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993. This marked a significant step in expanding options for barrier contraception and empowering individuals to take control of their sexual health.

Further Developments

Over time, subsequent versions and materials were developed to improve usability and affordability. These include the FC2, which is made of synthetic latex.
