How Do You Make Liquid Coconut Oil From Solid?

Published in Cooking Tips 2 mins read

You can easily melt solid coconut oil into a liquid using several methods, primarily involving gentle heat. Here's how:

Methods for Melting Solid Coconut Oil

There are two main methods for melting coconut oil, both ensuring it doesn't overheat and lose its beneficial properties:

1. Direct Heat on the Stove

This is a quick and efficient method.

  1. Spoon the desired amount: Place the solid coconut oil into a small saucepan.
  2. Heat gently: Set the saucepan over medium-low heat. It's crucial to use medium-low heat to prevent burning or scorching the oil.
  3. Monitor and swirl: Keep a close eye on the coconut oil as it melts. Swirl it occasionally to ensure even heating and prevent hot spots.
  4. Remove from heat: Once fully melted, remove the saucepan from the heat immediately.

2. Indirect Heat on the Stove (Water Bath)

This method is gentler and ideal if you have the coconut oil in a glass jar.

  1. Prepare a water bath: Fill a saucepan with a few inches of water and bring it to a gentle simmer.
  2. Place the jar: Carefully place the glass jar containing the solid coconut oil into the simmering water. Ensure the water level isn't so high that it spills into the jar.
  3. Heat gently: The simmering water will gradually warm the jar and melt the coconut oil.
  4. Monitor: Check the coconut oil periodically.
  5. Remove from heat: Once completely melted, carefully remove the jar from the hot water bath. Use caution as the jar will be hot.

Additional Tips:

  • Avoid High Heat: Never use high heat as it can damage the coconut oil and affect its flavor and nutritional value.
  • Microwave Caution: While you can melt coconut oil in the microwave, it's easy to overheat. Use short bursts (15-30 seconds) and stir in between to prevent splattering and burning.
  • Storage: Melted coconut oil will solidify again at temperatures below 76°F (24°C). This is normal and doesn't affect the quality of the oil. You can melt and re-solidify coconut oil multiple times.
