What is the rice trick?

Published in Cooking Tips 1 min read

The "rice trick" is a simple method for measuring the correct amount of water to add when cooking rice.

Here's how it works:

  1. Add rice to a pot: Place the desired amount of uncooked rice into a cooking pot.
  2. Optional Rinse: You may optionally rinse the rice to remove excess starch. This step is a matter of personal preference. Drain the rice if you rinse it.
  3. Level the Rice: Ensure the surface of the rice in the pot is relatively level.
  4. The Finger Measurement: Place your index fingertip lightly on top of the leveled rice.
  5. Add Water: Add cold water to the pot until the water level reaches your first knuckle.

This method generally works well for most types of rice, providing a reliable water-to-rice ratio without precise measuring cups. The exact amount of water needed can vary slightly depending on the type of rice and your preference for the final texture. Experimentation is encouraged!
