How Do I Change Layers in CorelDRAW?

Published in CorelDRAW Layers 2 mins read

To change layers in CorelDRAW, you're likely asking about one of these two things: selecting objects on different layers or renaming a layer. Here's how to do both:

Selecting Objects on Different Layers

CorelDRAW uses layers to organize your design elements. Changing layers often means selecting and manipulating objects that reside on different layers. Here's how you work with layers:

  1. Open the Object Manager docker: Go to Window > Dockers > Objects. This will display all the layers and objects in your document.

  2. Navigate Layers: In the Object Manager, you'll see a hierarchical list of layers and the objects contained within each layer. You can expand or collapse layers to see the objects inside.

  3. Select Objects:

    • Directly in the Object Manager: Click on the object name in the Object Manager docker to select it.
    • On the Canvas: To select an object on the canvas, you may need to ensure its layer is unlocked (a padlock icon next to the layer means it's locked, preventing selection). The actively selected layer in the Object Manager affects which objects are most easily selected on the canvas.
  4. Move Objects Between Layers (if desired):

    • Drag and Drop: Select the object in the Object Manager and drag it to the desired layer.
    • Copy/Paste: Copy the object (Ctrl+C), select the destination layer in the Object Manager, and then paste the object (Ctrl+V). You might need to adjust the object's position afterward.

Renaming a Layer

You can rename a layer to better organize your project.

  1. Open the Object Manager docker: Go to Window > Dockers > Objects.

  2. Rename the Layer:

    • Right-click Method: Right-click on the layer name in the Object Manager and select "Rename". Type the new name and press Enter.
    • Double-Click Method: Double-click on the layer name in the Object Manager. The name will become editable; type the new name and press Enter.

Important Note: When saving a CorelDRAW file to a previous version, layer names might not be preserved.
