What is Jaw Sag?

Published in Cosmetic Procedures 2 mins read

Jaw sag refers to the loss of firmness and the drooping of skin around the jawline, neck, and chin area. This sagging skin is often referred to as jowls.

As we age, several factors contribute to jaw sag:

  • Loss of Skin Elasticity: The skin's collagen and elastin fibers, which provide support and elasticity, naturally break down over time. This results in thinner, less firm skin that is more prone to sagging.

  • Loss of Facial Volume: Facial fat pads diminish with age, leading to a loss of volume in the cheeks and around the jawline. This loss of support causes the skin to sag.

  • Gravity: The constant pull of gravity contributes to the downward migration of skin and soft tissues.

  • Genetics: Some individuals are genetically predisposed to developing jowls earlier or more prominently than others.

  • Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin, leading to premature aging and sagging skin.

While jaw sag is a natural part of aging, various treatments can help improve the appearance of the jawline:

  • Non-Surgical Options: These include treatments like dermal fillers to restore volume, radiofrequency or ultrasound to tighten the skin, and thread lifts to lift and support sagging tissues.

  • Surgical Options: A facelift (rhytidectomy) can surgically tighten the skin and underlying tissues of the face and neck, providing a more significant and long-lasting improvement.

Lifestyle factors such as maintaining a healthy weight, protecting the skin from sun exposure, and quitting smoking can also help slow down the development of jaw sag.
