Is Our Universe Infinite?

It is currently unknown whether our universe is infinite.

While the observable universe has a radius of approximately 47 billion light-years, this does not definitively indicate whether the entire universe is finite or infinite. The universe might be finite even if it is larger than the observable portion.

Possibilities for a Finite Universe

If the universe is finite, there are two main possibilities:

  • A Boundary or Edge: The universe could have a physical boundary or edge, beyond which there is nothing.
  • A Closed Topology: The universe could be finite but without a boundary, similar to the surface of a sphere. In this scenario, traveling far enough in one direction would eventually lead you back to your starting point.

The Challenge of Determining Infinity

Determining whether the universe is infinite presents significant challenges because:

  • We can only observe a limited portion of the universe (the observable universe).
  • Our current understanding of physics and cosmology is incomplete.
