What is the Cosmic Color?

Published in Cosmology 1 min read

The cosmic color is a slightly beigeish white.

This conclusion was reached by astronomers Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry in 2003, correcting their earlier 2002 analysis which had initially determined the average color of the universe to be a greenish white. Their corrected analysis was based on averaging the light from over 200,000 galaxies. The term "cosmic latte" is sometimes used informally to describe this color.

The process involved:

  • Spectral Analysis: Examining the spectral distribution of light emitted by many different galaxies.
  • Averaging: Calculating the average color based on the combined light.
  • Correction: Refining the initial calculation to arrive at the more accurate beigeish-white result.

While the specific color may not be a vibrant, easily named hue, it represents the overall average color of all the light in the universe. This is a fascinating insight into the composition and distribution of galaxies.
