To properly perform a Lateral Flow Test (LFT), also known as a rapid antigen test, follow these steps carefully:
-
Open Your Mouth Wide: Open your mouth as wide as comfortably possible to expose your tonsils (or where they would have been if you've had them removed).
-
Swab Your Tonsils (or the area): Using the provided swab, rub it firmly over both your tonsils (or the area where your tonsils used to be) at the back of your throat. Do this four times on each side. Ensure you make good contact with the surface.
-
Swab Your Nose: Following the throat swab, and using the same swab, carefully insert the swab into your nostril. Rotate the swab several times against the inside walls of your nostril, as instructed in your specific test kit. The exact depth and rotation requirements may vary, so refer to your kit instructions for guidance.
-
Process the Swab with the Kit Solution: After swabbing both your throat and nose, insert the swab into the tube containing the kit's solution. Swirl the swab in the solution several times, and then squeeze the tube to release as much liquid as possible from the swab before removing it.
-
Apply the Solution to the Test Device: Add the correct number of drops of the solution (as specified in the instructions) onto the designated area of the test device.
-
Wait for the Results: Wait for the specified amount of time (usually 15-30 minutes) as indicated in the test kit instructions.
-
Read and Interpret the Results: Check the test device for the appearance of lines. The instructions will explain how to interpret the results – usually, a control line must be present for the test to be valid, and the presence or absence of a test line determines a positive or negative result.
Important Considerations:
- Hygiene: Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after performing the test.
- Kit Instructions: Follow the specific instructions provided with your test kit, as different brands may have slightly different procedures.
- Accuracy: LFTs are most accurate when performed correctly and when viral load is high.
- Storage: Store test kits according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Disposal: Dispose of used test kits properly, following local guidelines.
