How to Make a Tassel?

Published in Crafting 2 mins read

To make a standard-length yarn tassel, you'll need cardboard, string, and yarn. Here's a simplified method based on typical instructions:

Steps to Create a Basic Yarn Tassel

  1. Prepare the Cardboard: Cut a rectangular piece of cardboard approximately 4 inches long. This will determine the length of your tassel.

  2. Attach the Hanging Loop String: Tape a 5-inch piece of string across the top of the cardboard. This will form the loop used to hang the tassel. Make sure to leave the ends of the string free so you can tie them later.

  3. Wrap the Yarn: Wrap the yarn around the cardboard (including over the 5-inch string) approximately 24 times. The more you wrap, the thicker your tassel will be.

  4. Secure the Loop: Once you reach the desired thickness, tie the ends of the 5-inch string in a tight knot at the top of the wrapped yarn. This creates the hanging loop for the tassel.

  5. Cut the Yarn: Carefully cut the wrapped yarn along the bottom edge of the cardboard. This will release the loops and create the fringe of the tassel.

  6. Remove from Cardboard: Gently slide the cut yarn off the cardboard.

  7. Tie off the Tassel Head: Cut a length of yarn (about 8-10 inches). Fold the tassel in half at the loop and use this separate piece of yarn to tie all the strands together tightly a short distance (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch) below the loop. Tie a double knot and trim the ends neatly. You can wrap this yarn around the tassel multiple times before tying it off for a more decorative look.

  8. Trim the Tassel: Finally, trim the bottom of the tassel to create an even fringe.

This creates a basic yarn tassel that can be used for various crafts and decorations. Experiment with different yarn types, colors, and wrapping amounts to create unique tassel variations!
