How Do I Put One Picture on Top of Another on Cricut?

Published in Cricut Design Space Layers 3 mins read

To put one picture on top of another in Cricut Design Space, you use the Arrange tool to control the layering of your images.

Understanding Layers in Cricut Design Space

When you add multiple images or objects to your Canvas in Cricut Design Space, they are placed on different layers. These layers are stacked on top of each other, similar to a pile of paper. The order of these layers determines which objects appear in front of or behind others.

Steps to Put One Picture On Top

Putting one image on top of another is a simple process of bringing the desired image's layer to the front of the stack.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Select the Image: On your Canvas, click on the image or object that you want to appear on top of the other one.
  2. Access the Arrange Tool: With the image selected, look for the Arrange tool. In the desktop version of Design Space, this is typically found in the top toolbar under "Operation". In other versions, it might be in a contextual menu or properties panel.
  3. Choose 'Bring to Front': From the Arrange options, select Bring to Front. This action moves the selected image's layer all the way to the very top of the layer stack, ensuring it appears on top of all other objects on the Canvas.

Alternatively, you might use Bring Forward, which moves the selected image forward by just one layer at a time. If you have many layers, Bring to Front is the quickest way to get your image on top of everything.

The Arrange Tool Explained

The Arrange tool provides controls for managing the order of your layers. As seen in the context of arranging objects like moving a square behind an image such as Mickey, you can send objects backward as well as bring them forward. The main options include:

  • Send to Front: Moves the selected layer to the very top of the layer stack.
  • Bring Forward: Moves the selected layer one step closer to the top of the layer stack.
  • Send to Back: Moves the selected layer to the very bottom of the layer stack. This is the opposite of putting something on top, useful when you need an object to be behind others, as demonstrated by the need to move a square behind Mickey in the reference context.
  • Send Backward: Moves the selected layer one step closer to the bottom of the layer stack.

By using the "Bring to Front" or "Bring Forward" options from the Arrange tool, you can easily control which of your pictures appears on top of another in Cricut Design Space.
