Who has 100 wives in history?

Published in Cultural History 1 min read

Abumbi II, the 11th Fon (king) of Bafut, Cameroon, is known to have close to 100 wives.

According to Bafut tradition, when a Fon dies, his successor inherits all of the previous Fon's wives. Abumbi II then marries his own additional queens. This tradition is meant to strengthen community bonds and preserve cultural heritage.

While Abumbi II didn't marry all 100 wives initially, he inherited a significant number of them upon his ascension to the throne and has added to that number during his reign. This number reflects the historical and cultural practices of the Bafut people rather than solely representing individual marital choices.
