How to Use Root Clips for Curly Hair?

Published in Curly Hair Styling 3 mins read

Root clipping is a technique used to add volume to curly hair by lifting the roots while they dry. Here's how to do it:

Steps for Root Clipping

  1. Start with Damp Hair: Begin when your curly hair is approximately 80% dry, usually after applying your styling products. This ensures the hair is pliable enough to manipulate but not so wet that it will take forever to dry.

  2. Gather Your Clips: You'll need root clips designed for this purpose (often duckbill clips or similar). Ensure they are clean and free of any residue that might weigh down your hair.

  3. Section and Lift: Gently grab a small section of hair at the root. Lift the section upwards, perpendicular to your scalp, to create volume.

  4. Secure with a Clip: Place the clip as close to the scalp as possible, securing the lifted section in place. The clip should hold the hair up and away from your head.

  5. Repeat Around Your Head: Continue this process, working in sections around your head. Focus on areas where you desire the most volume, such as the crown. Avoid clipping directly on your part line if you don't want to disrupt it.

  6. Allow to Dry Completely: Let your hair air dry completely with the clips in place. You can also use a diffuser on a low heat setting to speed up the drying process.

  7. Remove Clips Carefully: Once your hair is fully dry, gently remove the clips. Be careful not to pull or tug, as this can cause frizz.

  8. Fluff and Style: After removing the clips, fluff your hair at the roots with your fingers to enhance the volume. You can also use a pick or wide-tooth comb for this. Style as desired.

Tips for Best Results

  • Clip Placement: Experiment with different clip placements to find what works best for your hair type and desired volume.
  • Hair Products: Ensure your hair is properly moisturized and styled before clipping. Using a volumizing mousse or gel can enhance the results.
  • Patience is Key: Allow your hair to dry fully before removing the clips. This is crucial for achieving lasting volume.
  • Avoid Overlapping Clips: Overlapping clips can create unwanted dents in your hair.
  • Clip Size: The size of the clip may affect the curl pattern and degree of lift at the root. Smaller clips provide a more defined lift in smaller areas, while larger clips are better for broader volume.
